GLADYS REYES real life MARA

In the workshops that I (Beverly Vergel) conducted for actors and would be actors from the 90’s up to late 2000, I would always ask my students who do they want to be like in showbiz and what is their dream role?  Consistently and unanimously, the female actors wanted an image just like JUDAY who is known as being sweet, unassuming, humble and meek.  Especially in the 90’s, the popular choice for a dramatic role was MARA, the proverbial underdog in the epic hit and longest running daily soap opera MARA CLARA or that of a heroine role.  In all those years, not once did anyone tell me that they want to follow the footsteps of CLARA, the ultimate tormentor of MARA and the classic villainess of all time, in the mother of all teleseryes, MARA CLARA

At the height of MARA CLARA, viewers were so emotionally drawn to the story that they hate CLARA, the character that GLADYS portrayed and even carried it over to GLADYS REYES the actress.  The whole time that MARA CLARA was on air, CLARA was the most hated character of all time. No one else came close.

With MARA CLARA airing 5 days a week for 5 years, I too was known by another name. It was no longer BEVERLY VERGEL, the leading lady to action stars and the country’s top comedians, but rather as ALMIRA DEL VALLE, the fragile mother of MARA and CLARA. It was a common experience for people to stop and tell me where to find the diary that would reveal the truth about MARA and CLARA’s identity. Immediately after that, they feel compelled to tell me that CLARA is tormenting MARA behind my back!  “Nakakagigil and nakaka-inis si CLARA! Ang sarap ngyang sabunutan!” was a common reaction. They want me to punish CLARA because “sobrang kawawa naman si MARA”.

It only goes to show how effective and convincing GLADYS was as CLARA. MARA CLARA was so engaging that even if people knew that it was only acting, the emotion it triggered was real and consuming. What makes "good vs. evil" stories so effective?  The answer is in the "galing" of the villain. In terms of acting, the villain exerts more effort, more energy, more intensity and invests more emotions to make the heroine appear "so kawawa". Imagine a scene where the villain is lethargic, timid and soft spoken and you'll see what i mean.

These days, viewers seem to have become more open, more accepting and more honest. Contravidas are becoming the new commercial endorsers and fashionable digital billboard models.  My 9 year old niece DANIELLA LUZ wants to become the next GLADYS REYES.  She wants portray the role of the mean, bullying, bad girl CLARA.  She knows she can act meaner than anyone her age. Beat that! She is confident about herself, she knows what she wants and she makes everyone know that she wants it. Assertive as she is, I have seen DANIELLA in class. She is a perfectionist, she takes her acting exercises seriously and she can effortlessly be "mataray" just like GLADYS REYES or CLARA!

At a very young age, GLADYS REYES was already serious with her craft, she was responsible and disciplined. She was a prayerful conservative girl and a diligent follower of her church.

As fate would have it, her “reel life” co-actor CHRISTOPHER ROXAS in MARA CLARA later became the love of her life for real. The couple tied the knot and is blessed with three beautiful children GIAN-CHRISTOPHE, GIANNA AQUISHA, and GRANT CARLIN

Through the years, GLADYS has remained true to her real self.  A prayerful and devout faithful, a hardworking professional actress, a devoted wife, a responsible mother, a dutiful and caring daughter to her parents.

In GLADYS’ reply below, you will learn of her healthy perspective about work and life. Despite starting a showbiz career at 6 years old, her life and values did not revolve around the business alone.

Growing-up and still going strong in showbiz is a testament of how much she is meant for the industry. GLADYS  loves her craft, she loves showbiz and appreciates all that it has given her, but what is more meaningful to her is the purpose it serves. What is at the top most of GLADYS’ value list? The health and well-being of all her loved ones.

Like us, GLADYS has had her share of life’s trials and challenges.  Like the tough, confident and self-assured character that she portrays as a villain, GLADYS confronts life’s challenges squarely in the face, whether in bite size or in bulk. Her courage is strengthened by the trials she takes in stride, by the love and support of her family, the support of her church and her indomitable faith in God.

Unknown to the public, GLADYS REYES is a real-life MARA. A giving, loving, humble and caring mother, wife and daughter.
